The easiest combination is Miyajima plus the Peace Memorial Park area, connected by the World Heritage Sea Route. This direct boat links Miyajima with the Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Memorial Park area, so you can take the JR train and ferry out in the morning, then return by boat to central Hiroshima instead of backtracking by rail. Check the current schedule before relying on it, as departures are limited and routes can change or be canceled depending on tide levels.

Miyajima plus Iwakuni can also work. Both sit along the same westward stretch of the JR Sanyo Main Line, so the route makes sense.

The combinations to resist are Miyajima plus Okunoshima, and Miyajima plus Onomichi or the Shimanami Kaido. Okunoshima has its own ferry logistics, while Onomichi lies to the east. For a lighter day between bigger ones, Saijo is often the better answer.

Miyajima: The One to Build a Whole Day Around

The JR train from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi takes about 28 minutes, and the JR West ferry crosses to the island in roughly ten. If you want time for the bridge, riverside, and castle area without checking the clock, treat Iwakuni as its own half-day rather than an add-on. 

The bridge can be crossed at any hour, though the fee counter keeps set hours. Crossing fees are being revised from September 1, 2026, so check current prices before you go.

Okunoshima: Why You Should Visit the Island

Okunoshima draws a lot of attention online, so it helps to be clear about what kind of trip it is. The island is about 4 km around, part of Setonaikai National Park, and home to many wild rabbits living freely. From Hiroshima, you need to reach Tadanoumi, walk to the port, then take a 15-minute ferry. The boat fare is separate from JR rail coverage.

That effort is fine if a slow island day is what you want. The rabbits should be treated as wild animals, not handled like pets. The island also carries a heavier wartime history: the Okunoshima Poison Gas Museum was built to pass down the history of secret poison gas production on the island, so this is not only a cute animal stop.
