The Hozugawa River Boat Ride takes you downstream from Kameoka to Arashiyama, through a wooded gorge west of Kyoto. From the boat, the mountains look different than they do from a train window or riverside path. Boatmen steer through faster water and quiet stretches alike.
The roughly 16-km journey usually takes around one and a half to two hours. It’s a change from moving between sightseeing stops, though there are rapids, other passengers, and some planning involved.

What Is the Hozugawa River Boat Ride Actually Like?
From Quiet Water to Rocky Rapids
The river changes as it winds through the gorge. In calmer stretches, you can look up at the trees and watch the banks slip past. Then the current picks up, the water grows louder, and the boatmen guide it between rocks.
One of the named rapids is Koayu no Taki, where the river drops approximately two meters. You might see birds along the banks, although sightings depend on the day.
You stay seated while the boatmen work, rather than paddling as you would on a rafting trip. Faster sections can bring splashes despite protective sheets.
The boatmen communicate as they navigate, and other passengers may chat or react to the rapids. If you prefer to choose when to stop and listen, a riverside walk might suit you better.

The Boatmen and the River’s History
The crew uses poles, oars, and rudders, adjusting their movements as the current and riverbed change. Watching that skilled work is part of the experience.
The Hozugawa was once used to transport timber and other goods from the Tamba region toward Kyoto. In 1606, merchant Suminokura Ryōi carried out major improvements to the waterway. Some riverside rocks still show marks left by poles and ropes used when boats traveled this route for work rather than sightseeing.
Is the Hozugawa River Boat Ride Worth It?
If sitting back and watching the mountains appeals to you, this could be a good way to spend part of a Kyoto day. Follow the bends in the river or watch how the boatmen handle the current.
After busy temples and city streets, sitting on the river may feel like a welcome break. Shared boats and popular dates, however, don’t guarantee quiet or short queues.
You’ll sit without a backrest for a long time, there’s no toilet aboard, and you may get splashed. Consider the fare and travel time to Kameoka as well.
If you have half a day or more around Arashiyama and enjoy rivers and mountain scenery, the ride is worth looking into. If you only want a short look at the water, walking near Togetsukyo Bridge is easier and leaves more of the day free.

The Best Time of Year for the Hozugawa River Boat Ride
In spring, cherry blossoms appear in parts of the gorge, followed by fresh green leaves. Blooming dates vary, and the route isn’t lined with blossom trees from beginning to end.
Summer brings dense greenery and warm weather. The slopes turn a deep green, but you’ll be outdoors in the heat. Heavy rain can also raise the river level and stop departures.
Autumn draws visitors for the red and gold leaves. It’s a popular time to go, which makes advance reservations especially useful. Quieter green hills can be just as enjoyable as peak foliage.
Winter offers a clearer view of the slopes through bare branches. The operator currently uses open boats without heating, however, and sitting outside for this long can be cold. Check the winter timetable and dress accordingly.

Tickets, Prices and Reservations
How Much Does the Boat Ride Cost?
The published 2026 fare is ¥6,000 for adults and ¥4,500 for children from preschool age through elementary school. All passengers must be at least 80 cm tall and wear a properly fitted life jacket.
The operator’s FAQ says about 100 minutes, while its fare page says about two hours. Allow two hours aboard, plus travel, check-in, and waiting time.
Do You Need to Book in Advance?
For smaller groups, online reservations are normally available until the day before travel. Groups of ten or more book by telephone. You can also buy a same-day ticket at the Kameoka boarding office, subject to availability.
Autumn is the time to plan more carefully. The operator advises walk-up visitors to arrive around 8:00–8:30 a.m., before queues build after the scenic-train passengers start arriving around 9:30. A sold-out online slot doesn’t necessarily rule out same-day tickets.
For March 10 through December 13, 2026, the published weekday timetable lists hourly departures from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Weekends and public holidays follow a different departure arrangement, with boats generally leaving as passengers gather.
Check the official booking information and timetable before you travel, especially outside the regular season.
How to Get to the Hozugawa River Boat Ride
Getting to the Departure Point in Kameoka
Boats travel from Kameoka to Arashiyama only. To make the trip from Kyoto, take a JR train to Kameoka Station, then walk about ten minutes to the departure point. Arrive with enough time to check in and use the toilets before boarding.
The boat finishes near Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama. From the landing area, JR Saga-Arashiyama Station is about 15–20 minutes away on foot.
Take the boat earlier in the day and leave the afternoon free for Arashiyama.
Can You Combine It with the Sagano Romantic Train?
Yes. Taking the Sagano Romantic Train toward Kameoka and returning to Arashiyama by boat lets you see the gorge from two different angles.

But the train doesn’t stop beside the boat departure point. From Torokko Kameoka Station, you’ll need a local bus or taxi. The operator gives an example of a 9:02 a.m. train from Torokko Saga, followed by a 9:35 a.m. bus and a 10:00 a.m. boat. The bus fare is currently ¥500 for adults.
Use those times as a planning example, not a guaranteed connection. Check both services before booking. If transfers feel like too much trouble, going directly to Kameoka by JR is simpler.

A Guided Train-and-Boat Day Tour in Late Autumn
The train-out, boat-back route is easier when someone else is watching the connections. On November 27 and 30 and December 1, 2026, ENJYU JAPAN guides a day that rides the Sagano Romantic Train to Kameoka and returns to Arashiyama on the Hozugawa boat.
The morning is spent at Tenryu-ji, the Bamboo Grove and Nonomiya Shrine. Train seats and boat tickets are booked in advance.
Check the tour page for the current inclusions, price, availability and operating conditions before making plans.
Comfort, Weather and Safety: What to Know Before Boarding
Seating, Clothing and Accessibility
On regular shared boats, passengers sit on benches without backrests, and the crew assigns the seats. There are toilets at the boarding facility, but none during the ride.
Dress for the weather and possible splashes. Bring sun protection in summer and warm layers in winter. Secure your phone or camera and follow the crew’s instructions.
Wheelchair users need to transfer into a boat seat and have someone accompanying them. Remaining in a wheelchair during the journey isn’t permitted, although a folding wheelchair may be carried aboard. If boarding or sitting for a long time could be difficult, ask the operator about your circumstances before reserving.
Safety Measures and Weather Cancellations
In March 2023, a boat capsized on the Hozugawa, killing two boatmen. The operator subsequently introduced further safety measures, including rescue training, boat monitoring, and stricter limits on river levels. Life jackets are compulsory for passengers. These steps are important, but river travel still carries some risk.
Light rain doesn’t automatically stop the service; boats may use a cover. High water, heavy rain, storms, or strong winds can lead to cancellations, sometimes even if the weather looks fine when you arrive.
Check the operator’s safety information and the current operating status on the day. When the operator cancels a departure, it says online bookings are refunded in full. If this is a highlight of your Kyoto plans, have another activity in mind in case the boats aren’t running.
After the Boat Ride: Enjoying Arashiyama
The boat lands near Arashiyama’s riverside paths, within reach of Togetsukyo Bridge, gardens, and temples. You could spend the rest of the day exploring, or simply take a walk along the river before heading back.
You may see other roofed boats near Togetsukyo, sometimes in the evening. Those are part of separate short sightseeing or seasonal evening services, not the Hozugawa descent from Kameoka.
Experiencing Kyoto from the River
You might remember a quick passage through rocks, the boatmen working together, or a quiet bend with a view of the hillside. There’s no need to rush straight to another attraction.
Leave some room in your itinerary for the boat to run late or not at all. If you’d like help fitting the river into a Kyoto trip, ENJYU JAPAN can help plan a Tailor-Made Tour with sensible connections and other options when the weather changes.
