Sagano Romantic Train: Best Seasons, Seats, Tickets and Route Tips

The Sagano Romantic Train follows the Hozu River through a wooded gorge between Arashiyama and Kameoka, on Kyoto’s western outskirts. The 25-minute ride reveals new river views around each bend. Spring brings fresh green leaves; by late autumn, the slopes turn red and gold.

If you enjoy the journey itself, it is worth considering while visiting Arashiyama. Just arrange your return from Kameoka beforehand. You can ride the sightseeing train back, walk to a regular JR station or take a boat down the river. Each option makes for a rather different day.

Is the Sagano Romantic Train Worth It?

The train suits visitors who enjoy forests, rivers and slower journeys. It is less useful if you are trying to fit several Kyoto sights into a short visit. Reaching the station and returning from Kameoka also takes time.

Tunnels and rock walls sometimes interrupt the views. Wooden seats, summer heat and standing tickets may also make the ride less comfortable.

If the gorge is the reason you are going, the sightseeing train is an appealing option. If you are mainly trying to reach Kameoka, regular JR is more practical.

What Makes the Sagano Romantic Train Special?

The 7.3-kilometer route follows an older section of the San-in Line that reopened as a sightseeing railway in 1991. Its tracks wind past wooded slopes, rock faces, tunnels and a bridge across the river.

Near Torokko Hozukyo, the valley narrows, with forested hills rising beside the river. Boats may be visible downstream before the landscape opens toward Kameoka.

The river is not always on the same side of the carriage. As the train follows the bends and crosses the water, different views appear from each window.

When Is the Best Time to Ride?

Autumn is the most famous season, but the route is also attractive when the hills are green. Each season has its advantages and drawbacks.

Spring: Blossoms and Fresh Green Leaves

Cherry blossoms generally appear from late March into early April, depending on the weather. They give way to pale-green leaves across the hillsides.

The new leaves contrast with the darker rocks and river, even after the blossoms have faded.

Summer: Deep Green Forests and River Views

In summer, dense foliage surrounds the river. Open windows bring in the sounds and air of the gorge. The mountainsides form an almost continuous green backdrop, with occasional glimpses of water through the trees.

Kyoto summers are hot and humid, and the open-air carriage offers little shelter from rain. Consider the weather when booking.

Autumn: Famous Foliage

The usual foliage season runs from mid-November to early December. The reds and golds can be striking against the river and rock faces, which helps explain why autumn departures are so popular.

Reservations are also harder to secure near the peak. If green maple leaves appeal to you, spring or early summer can be equally rewarding. Check recent seasonal updates for timing.

In 2026, the railway’s operating season runs from March 1 to December 29, with some non-operating days. Trains normally stop for maintenance in January and February. The official operating calendar has the dates.

Which Direction and Boarding Station Should You Choose?

The train serves four stations: Torokko Saga, Torokko Arashiyama, Torokko Hozukyo and Torokko Kameoka. Both directions have good views; let your itinerary guide the choice.

Starting from Arashiyama

Torokko Saga is near JR Saga-Arashiyama on the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto. Torokko Arashiyama is closer to the bamboo grove. That can save some walking if you have already spent the morning on the paths around Arashiyama, but do not confuse it with JR Saga-Arashiyama Station.

Torokko Arashiyama has around 60 steps to its platform and no elevator. Torokko Saga is preferable for travelers who have difficulty with stairs.

Starting from Kameoka

From JR Umahori, it is about a ten-minute walk to Torokko Kameoka. The scenic train then brings you to Arashiyama for sightseeing.

If you want to combine the train with a boat ride back to Arashiyama, starting at Saga and traveling toward Kameoka is usually the easier arrangement.

Which Seats Have the Best Views?

Window Seats and Facing Direction

On the existing 2026 train, seats A and D are beside the windows in four-person seating boxes. Toward Kameoka, C and D face forward; toward Saga, A and B face forward. That makes D the forward-facing window seat for Kameoka-bound journeys and A for Saga-bound journeys.

The river changes sides as the track turns, so neither window side is best throughout. For two travelers, booking a pair that includes a window seat is more useful than trying to find one supposedly perfect side.

Is the Open-Air Rich Car Worth It?

The current Rich Car (No. 5) has open sides and a glass ceiling; standard cars have opening windows. The Rich Car lets in more wind and outside sounds. On a pleasant day, this is part of its appeal, although regular cars may be more comfortable if the weather is uncertain.

With the open sides, you may get wet in rain. Umbrellas are prohibited, and rain does not qualify you for a same-day refund or seat change.

These details apply to the older train. Check the official seat guide for travel in 2027.

Tickets, Prices and Reservations

When to Book

In 2026, one-way tickets cost ¥880 for adults and ¥440 for children under the operator’s fare rules. The fare is fixed regardless of distance, and riding both ways requires two tickets. The Japan Rail Pass is not valid.

Online reservations open at midnight Japan time, one month before the date of travel. The release can fall on a different local date overseas. For example, tickets for November 20 become available at midnight JST on October 20, which may still be October 19 where you live. In autumn, book early if you have a seating preference.

Choose your departure, carriage and seat online, and review the cancellation conditions.

What to Check Before Your Ride

Same-day tickets are sometimes available at Torokko Saga, Arashiyama and Kameoka, but not Hozukyo. Limited standing tickets may follow a sellout. Neither is reliable if you have a timed connection. A standing ticket is also a poor substitute for a chosen window seat if scenery is your main reason for riding.

For an online reservation, you need a phone or tablet that can display the QR e-ticket. A printed confirmation is not enough on its own. Current details are available on the operator’s tickets and fares page and FAQ.

What to Do After Arriving in Kameoka

From Kameoka, you can return by JR, take a boat or stay longer to explore.

Return by Regular JR Train

JR Umahori is about ten minutes on foot from Torokko Kameoka, with regular trains back toward Saga-Arashiyama and Kyoto.

Combine the Train with the Hozugawa River Boat Ride

Traveling out by train and back by boat changes your perspective on the gorge: from above, then from the river between the wooded slopes and rock faces. The boat takes about two hours, depending on conditions, and finishes in Arashiyama.

A scenic riverboat ride through a narrow gorge, with colorful autumn foliage and a sightseeing train running along the mountainside.

A published 2026 connection is: Torokko Saga 9:02 → Kameoka 9:25 → bus 9:35 → boat 10:00. The ten-minute train-to-bus transfer is tight. There is little room for a slow walk, photographs or wandering around the station, so head directly to the bus stop. Adult fares are ¥6,000 for the boat and ¥500 for the bus, plus the train fare.

On the standard 2026 timetable, the 14:02 train from Saga is the last practical connection to the boat; 15:02 is too late. Seasonal timetables may bring that cutoff forward. Check the boat timetable and bus times, and book the boat separately. High water or severe weather can cancel sailings.

Allow More Time for Kameoka

If you want time in Kameoka, consider a later boat or JR return. Going by boat first is another option in autumn, subject to connections. This can be useful if you prefer to enjoy the river early and return to Arashiyama by sightseeing train later.

Planning Ahead: The New Train Arriving in 2027

The existing train is due to retire on December 29, 2026, with its replacement planned for spring 2027. Evening illuminations are scheduled on selected services between October 24 and December 29, 2026.

If you are visiting in 2027, consult the new-train announcements for updated seats and schedules.

A Last Autumn Ride Tour in the Original Cars

The 2026 season is the final one for the carriages that have run through the gorge since 1991. ENJYU JAPAN guides a day in Arashiyama built around that ride on November 27 and 30 and December 1.

The morning covers Tenryu-ji, the Bamboo Grove and Nonomiya Shrine. In the afternoon, you take a reserved seat from Torokko Saga to Torokko Kameoka, then return to Arashiyama on the Hozugawa River Boat Ride. Seats are booked for you, so there is no need to wait for the midnight release one month ahead.
